Speaking at the World Economic Forum, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, framed current turmoil as a catalyst for change, arguing that “geopolitical shocks can – and must – serve as an opportunity for Europe” to build a new form of European independence.

Addressing Arctic security amid renewed tensions over Greenland, she stressed transatlantic alignment with the United States, citing cooperation such as Finland’s icebreaker sales and warning that proposed tariffs between allies are “a mistake.”

Von der Leyen underscored EU resolve, stating that “our response will be unflinching, united and proportional,” while reaffirming solidarity with Denmark, support for Arctic security investment, and respect for sovereignty. The address positioned European independence, partnership with allies, and strategic restraint as mutually reinforcing.
