US President Donald Trump said he will not be imposing planned tariffs on European allies following talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, citing agreement on a framework for future cooperation on Arctic security.
Trump said the discussions covered Greenland and the wider Arctic region, and that tariffs due to take effect on 1 February would not be imposed while negotiations continue. He added that further talks would address the proposed Golden Dome missile defence concept linked to Greenland.
In a Truth Social post Trump said: “Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region. This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st…”
Trump added that further discussions were under way on the Golden Dome proposal, and said negotiations would be led by Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, reporting directly to him.
The reversal followed Trump’s remarks at the World Economic Forum, where he reiterated interest in Greenland’s status but said he would not use force.
