US President Donald Trump used his keynote address at the World Economic Forum to argue that only Washington can guarantee the security and development of Greenland, while ruling out the use of force and calling for “immediate negotiations” over its future status.

Trump cited historical precedent, including the US military role in Greenland during the Second World War, and questioned the post-war return of the territory to Denmark. He said ownership—rather than basing rights or leases—was essential for defence, both legally and psychologically. Trump’s remarks come amid heightened strain in EU–US relations, as Greenland has emerged as a flashpoint over Arctic security, trade leverage, and sovereignty.
