Ecuador will impose a 30% “security tariff” on imports from Colombia from 1 February 2026, citing cross-border drug trafficking and illegal mining, President Daniel Noboa has announced.

In a social media statement, Noboa said the measure would remain until Colombia demonstrates “real commitment” to joint enforcement, arguing Ecuador faces a trade deficit exceeding $1bn while its military confronts criminal groups at the border.

The move mirrors tariff tactics used by Donald Trump, with whom Noboa has aligned closely. Since his 2025 re-election, Noboa has expanded security cooperation with Washington, including hosting US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has pursued a “Total Peace” strategy, prioritising dialogue and voluntary coca substitution. A United Nations report found Colombia remains the world’s largest cocaine producer, with rising cultivation.
