European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen survived a no-confidence motion in the European Parliament on Thursday (22 January), after MEPs voted overwhelmingly to reject an attempt to unseat her Commission.

The motion, tabled by Patriots for Europe (PfE), failed to reach the required two-thirds majority of votes cast and a majority of all sitting MEPs. The vote followed renewed political pressure linked to the EU–Mercosur trade agreement, which Parliament had referred to the EU Court of Justice a day earlier.

Key developments

• 390 MEPs voted against, 165 in favour, with 10 abstentions

• Motion accused the Commission of overstepping its mandate on the Mercosur deal

• Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič defended the Commission during the debate

• Farmers’ groups protested in Strasbourg, calling for von der Leyen’s resignation

It was the fourth failed censure attempt during von der Leyen’s second term as Commission President.
