U.S. President Donald Trump has formally launched the Board of Peace, an initiative initially focused on sustaining the Gaza ceasefire but intended to expand into broader global conflict mediation.

Trump, who will chair the board, said it would operate “in conjunction with the United Nations”, though several major powers have voiced concern it could dilute existing multilateral diplomacy.

Key points:

• Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of State, said the board’s immediate priority is implementing the Gaza peace plan

• Participation includes Türkiye , Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Indonesia

• Traditional Western allies remain cautious; France declined and the UK is not joining at present

• Permanent membership requires a $1bn financial contribution

• No other UN Security Council permanent member has committed so far
