Wind and solar power overtook fossil fuels in the European Union’s electricity mix for the first time in 2025, according to new data from Ember, underscoring the bloc’s accelerating shift towards low-carbon energy.

Wind and solar accounted for 30% of EU electricity generation, narrowly surpassing the 29% share from fossil fuels, including coal and gas.

Key developments:

• Solar capacity expanded by 19%, driving record renewable output

• Gas-fired generation rose 8% to offset drought-hit hydropower

• Coal fell to a record low 9.2%, with Germany and Poland posting historic lows

• Renewables and nuclear together supplied 71% of EU electricity

Solar now provides more than one-fifth of power in Spain, Hungary, and the Netherlands.

Despite progress, political resistance has slowed climate measures, while underinvestment in grids has driven price volatility. Ember urged greater spending on power networks and battery storage to stabilise costs and reduce gas dependence.
