Russian, Ukrainian and US officials are set to hold trilateral talks in the United Arab Emirates on Friday (23 January), marking the first meeting involving all three sides since the war began nearly four years ago.

The Kremlin confirmed Russia’s participation following talks in Moscow between President Vladimir Putin and US envoys. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov described those discussions as “substantive and constructive” but said a durable peace would require resolving territorial disputes.

Key developments:

• Russia insists any settlement must address territory, including parts of Donetsk still held by Kyiv

• Ukraine has proposed mutual troop withdrawals and a demilitarised economic zone in Donbas

• The US is advancing a 20-point peace framework, reportedly close to completion

• Talks will also cover security guarantees and economic arrangements

Zelenskyy said Ukraine is prepared for compromise but stressed Russia must do the same.
