China’s President Xi Jinping told Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva that Beijing would stand by Brazil and the wider Global South, while calling for renewed commitment to the United Nations, according to China’s state news agency Xinhua.

During a 45-minute telephone call, Xi said China and Brazil should “safeguard the shared interests of the Global South” and “jointly maintain the role of the United Nations” amid a volatile international environment.

Brazil’s presidency confirmed the call, stating that both leaders “reiterated their commitment to strengthening the United Nations as a path to safeguarding peace and stability in the world.”

The exchange followed President Lula’s public criticism of recent US actions in Venezuela, where he warned that “the future of Venezuela and any other country must remain in the hands of its people.”

Xi also pointed to deepening China–Brazil cooperation under their strategic partnership, including alignment with the Belt and Road Initiative.
