Unrest escalated across Minneapolis and several US cities on Sunday (25 January) as Tim Walz, Governor of Minnesota, warned the country had reached a “turning point” and urged US President Donald Trump to withdraw federal immigration agents from the city.

Tensions intensified following the fatal shooting of Alex Preti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse and military veteran, by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Preti is the second civilian killed by federal agents in Minneapolis this month.

While Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, said Preti was “brandishing” a weapon, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara stated the victim was a licensed firearm owner and may have been holding a phone. O’Hara said federal agents blocked local police from the scene.

Key developments

• Department of Justice subpoenaed Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey over alleged obstruction.

• CEOs from 3M, Target, and UnitedHealth Group urged de-escalation.

• Legal scrutiny has focused on Tenth Amendment authority and First Amendment protest rights amid federal crowd-control tactics.
