Independent UN experts have warned that escalating violence in South Sudan is increasing the risk of mass atrocities against civilians, as fighting intensifies and rhetoric hardens.
The UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan said it was “gravely alarmed” by clashes in Jonglei State, where witnesses report civilians fleeing into surrounding swamps.
Key developments
• South Sudan People’s Defence Forces spokesperson Lul Ruai Koang urged residents to evacuate areas held by the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition, warning civilians could be treated as military targets.
• The Commission said calls by commanders to target civilians and rapid troop mobilisation mark a dangerous escalation.
• Army chief Paul Nang Majok ordered forces to “crush the rebellion” within seven days.
• The United Nations Mission in South Sudan condemned the rhetoric; mission head Graham Maitland called it “utterly abhorrent”.
The crisis follows the collapse of a power-sharing deal after President Salva Kiir moved against Vice-President Riek Machar, now on trial. Authorities say renewed fighting has displaced more than 180,000 people.
