US President Donald Trump has warned that Iraq could face consequences if former prime minister Nouri al-Maliki returns to power, amid political negotiations in Iraq.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said: “I’m hearing that the Great Country of Iraq might make a very bad choice by reinstalling Nouri al-Maliki as Prime Minister. Last time Maliki was in power, the Country descended into poverty and total chaos. That should not be allowed to happen again. Because of his insane policies and ideologies, if elected, the United States of America will no longer help Iraq and, if we are not there to help, Iraq has ZERO chance of Success, Prosperity, or Freedom. MAKE IRAQ GREAT AGAIN!”

Iraq’s parliament is scheduled to elect a new president on 27 January 2026, after which the nominee of the largest bloc will have 15 days to form a government.

Key developments

• al-Maliki has backing from some Shia and Kurdish figures seeking rapid government formation

• Sunni groups have raised concerns over sectarian tensions and policy reversals

• US officials have flagged al-Maliki’s past ties to Iran as a potential risk to regional security
