The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has moved its Doomsday Clock to 85 seconds before midnight, the closest setting since its creation in 1947, citing escalating global risks.
The assessment highlights mounting nuclear, technological and climate threats, alongside what it describes as a failure of international leadership.
Key drivers identified
• Rising nuclear tensions involving Russia, China and the United States
• The erosion of arms-control frameworks, including uncertainty over the New START treaty
• Ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East
• Unregulated military use of artificial intelligence, including disinformation and biosecurity risks
• Persistent climate change pressures
Alexandra Bell, President and CEO of the Bulletin, warned that aggressive, nationalist policies are pushing global risks higher. Nobel laureate Maria Ressa also cautioned that AI-driven information systems are accelerating the spread of falsehoods faster than facts.
