Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said the country is targeting a $5 billion trade volume with Nigeria, up from roughly $2 billion, following talks with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the Nigerian leader’s state visit on Tuesday (27 January).
Speaking at a joint press briefing, Erdoğan said discussions were already under way to achieve the target, including the establishment of a Joint Economy and Trade Committee aimed at expanding Turkish investment in Nigeria. Current trade sees Türkiye export aircraft, machinery, iron and steel, and chemical products, while Nigeria supplies crude oil and agricultural goods.
Both leaders reviewed cooperation across trade, energy, defence, education, and security. Erdoğan said Türkiye was ready to support Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts through training and intelligence cooperation.
President Tinubu welcomed Türkiye’s willingness to collaborate, emphasising inclusive economic reform and Nigeria’s continued role in promoting peace and stability across Africa. Officials from both countries signed nine bilateral agreements covering defence, education, media, diaspora policy, and social development.
