European Union foreign ministers on Thursday (29 January) agreed to include the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the bloc’s list of terrorist organisations.

Meeting in Brussels, ministers also approved additional sanctions targeting individuals and entities linked to Iran’s recent internal repression. Ursula von der Leyen described the move as “long overdue”.

Key developments

• The EU will list the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist group, aligning it with organisations such as al-Qaeda and Islamic State.

• 15 individuals and six entities were added to the EU’s asset freeze and visa ban regime.

• The decision follows a violent crackdown on protests in Iran earlier in 2026.

• France and Italy reversed earlier opposition, citing accountability and human rights concerns.
