UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has told Chinese President Xi Jinping he wants a “sophisticated relationship” with Beijing, signalling a reset after years of strained ties.

The talks came during Starmer’s four-day visit to China — the first by a British prime minister in eight years — amid concerns over security, human rights, and economic growth.

Key developments

• Both sides agreed to pursue long-term engagement despite disagreements

• Britain is seeking reduced tariffs on whisky and expanded business access

• China is considering visa waivers for UK nationals

• The two governments will cooperate against migrant smuggling networks, including restricting Chinese-made boat engines

The visit follows similar engagement by Western leaders, including Canada’s Mark Carney, as allies hedge against policy unpredictability under US President Donald Trump.
