At a press conference outlining his priorities for 2026, António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, warned that the international system is becoming increasingly unstable as power politics override global norms.

Drawing on his background in physics, Guterres said the world no longer responds to political actions in predictable ways, noting that “reckless actions are provoking dangerous reactions” that are intensified by geopolitical divisions and impunity. He cautioned that “the law of power is prevailing over the power of law”, with international law routinely disregarded and cooperation steadily eroding.

Guterres argued that while multipolarity is becoming a defining feature of global affairs, “multipolarity by itself does not guarantee stability or peace.” He stressed that only strong and legitimate multilateral institutions, grounded in shared responsibility and values, can restore balance, prosperity, and international trust.
