Burkina Faso’s military-led authorities have issued a decree dissolving all political parties, extending restrictions imposed since successive coups in the Sahel state.
The decision was approved by the council of ministers as the government tightens controls amid a protracted fight against insurgent groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIL.
Emile Zerbo, Interior Minister, said the move aimed to “rebuild the state” following what authorities describe as dysfunction and abuses within the multiparty system.
Key developments
• All political parties and formations are dissolved, with assets transferred to the state
• A government review cited party proliferation as fuelling divisions and weakening cohesion
• Prior to the coups, Burkina Faso had more than 100 registered parties, with 15 in parliament after the 2020 election
