China and Russia have reaffirmed their strategic partnership amid growing strains on the global order.

During talks in Beijing on Sunday (1 February), Wang Yi, China’s Foreign Minister, met Sergei Shoigu, Secretary of the Russian Federation Security Council, just two months after their previous meeting in Russia.

Wang warned that the post-World War II international order is under pressure, cautioning against a return to “the law of the jungle”. He said China and Russia, as UN Security Council permanent members, share responsibility to uphold multilateralism and strengthen a UN-centred international system.

Key points:

• Commitment to deeper China–Russia strategic coordination

• Support for a more “just and reasonable” global governance system

• Agreement to implement consensus reached by the two heads of state

Shoigu reiterated Russia’s support for the one-China principle, opposition to Japan’s remilitarisation, and closer cooperation through the UN, SCO, and BRICS.
