China’s military has released a concept video showcasing Luanniao, a proposed flying space carrier designed to deploy unmanned fighter jets to near-space and orbital environments. The project forms part of China’s planned Nantianmen (Heavenly Gate) integrated air and space defence system.

Experts suggest the concept reflects strategic signalling and long-term military planning rather than an imminent deployable platform.

Key developments:

• Luanniao is reportedly 242 metres long, with a 684-metre wingspan and an estimated 120,000-tonne launch weight.

• The carrier would deploy Xuannu unmanned space fighters capable of launching hypersonic missiles.

• Juliana Süß, space security expert at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, said space capability remains a prestige and military priority for Beijing.

• Heinrich Kreft, German diplomat and space analyst, described the project as currently unrealistic but strategically symbolic.

Analysts view the proposal as part of China’s broader deterrence strategy and geopolitical signalling.
