China and Uruguay have expanded their comprehensive strategic partnership after President Yamandú Orsi met President Xi Jinping in Beijing, signing multiple cooperation agreements across science, technology, and trade.

Orsi described the visit as part of Uruguay’s strategy to strengthen international engagement and support long-term national development. President Xi Jinping emphasised cooperation towards a multipolar world and inclusive economic globalisation.

Orsi’s seven-day visit, accompanied by a 150-member delegation, comes amid heightened geopolitical scrutiny following the January 2026 removal of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and ongoing US efforts to limit Chinese influence in Latin America.

Key developments:

• Twelve bilateral cooperation agreements signed.

• China remains a major market for Uruguayan exports, including beef, soybeans, and dairy.

• Uruguay exported $3.49bn to China and imported $2.8bn in Chinese goods last year.

• Analysts say Uruguay is balancing ties between the United States and China rather than shifting alliances.
