NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reaffirmed NATO’s long-term military, political and security support for Ukraine during an address to the Verkhovna Rada, as the Russia–Ukraine war enters its fifth year.
Rutte said ongoing peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine represent progress but warned that continued Russian strikes undermine diplomatic efforts. He stated NATO and partner countries will maintain pressure on Moscow while continuing to strengthen Ukraine’s defence capabilities and military resilience.
He said Russia has suffered more than one million casualties, while territorial advances remain limited. NATO continues supplying weapons and training through the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) command and the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL).
In a separate address alongside Mark Rutte, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of breaching a US-backed pause on energy infrastructure strikes after launching 450 drones and 71 missiles, According to Zelenskyy, the strikes were deliberately aimed at Ukraine’s energy system in order to deprive civilians of electricity and heat amid subzero temperatures.
