Russia and Myanmar have formalised a five-year military cooperation agreement, sealing a partnership analysts suggest remains vital for the junta’s survival amidst ongoing civil unrest and international sanctions..
The pact was announced following a visit to Myanmar by Sergei Shoigu, the Russian Security Council Secretary, on Monday (2 February).
The agreement reinforces Moscow’s role as a primary supplier for the junta, which has faced sustained internal conflict since 2021. Sergei Shoigu affirmed Russia’s commitment to protecting Myanmar’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty.
Key Developments:
• The pact focuses on the enhancement of defence cooperation and international diplomatic assistance.
• Moscow pledged “comprehensive assistance” to the military leadership.
• The deal follows a controversial month-long election in Myanmar, which was widely criticised for excluding jailed leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
