Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a videoconference on Wednesday (4 February), reaffirming their China–Russia strategic partnership and outlining plans to expand cooperation across economic, diplomatic, and cultural sectors.

Both leaders highlighted 2026 as a milestone year, marking the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation and continued coordination through multilateral forums including the United Nations, BRICS, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Key developments:

• Bilateral trade has exceeded $200 billion annually for three consecutive years.

• Russia remains a leading energy supplier to China, with expanding cooperation in nuclear research, industry, and space.

• Agricultural trade rose by over 20%.

• Educational exchanges include 56,000 Chinese students in Russia and 21,000 Russian students in China.

• Leaders pledged closer foreign policy coordination to support a multipolar global order.

Both sides described their partnership as a stabilising force in global geopolitics.
