Singapore has called for stronger international cooperation to counter shadow fleet vessels operating near its waters, amid growing scrutiny of ships suspected of sanctions evasion.
In a parliamentary reply, Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow said Singapore fully enforces United Nations Security Council resolutions and rejects illegal maritime activity. He warned that vessels linked to deceptive practices may be refused entry or detained.
Singapore, the world’s largest bunkering hub, is intensifying maritime monitoring across the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, a key global shipping corridor linking Europe, the Middle East and East Asia.
Key developments:
• Singapore coordinates patrols and shares intelligence with regional partners to combat illicit shipping.
• Authorities track vessel movements through the Vessel Traffic Service and mandatory ship-reporting systems.
• Suspected breaches of International Maritime Organization regulations are reported to relevant flag states.
• The region has seen increased ship-to-ship oil transfers linked to sanctioned cargo.
