The United States and Iran are preparing for their first formal negotiations since Washington struck Tehran’s nuclear programme in 2025, as Middle East security tensions continue to rise.

US President Donald Trump warned that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei should be “very worried” ahead of talks scheduled in Muscat, Oman. The negotiations will involve Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US special envoy Steve Witkoff.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington wants discussions to address Iran’s nuclear programme, ballistic missile development, regional militant support, and human rights concerns. Iranian officials insist negotiations should focus on sanctions relief and nuclear issues.

Tensions remain elevated after reports that Iran deployed the Khorramshahr-4 long-range ballistic missile, while US forces recently shot down an Iranian drone in the Arabian Sea. Iranian Revolutionary Guard vessels also reportedly approached a US-flagged tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns over regional stability.
