Thousands of teachers and education staff protested in Bucharest, Romania, on Thursday (5 February) over government austerity measures targeting the education sector.

The coalition government led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan approved two reform packages aimed at reducing Romania’s budget deficit, including a 10% reduction to public institution salary funds. Teachers have warned of potential nationwide strike action if further cuts proceed.

Protesters argue that funding pressures are worsening working conditions across schools and universities. Liviu-George Maha, Rector of Al I Cuza University of Iași, said restrictions on universities using self-generated revenues could increase dependence on state funding.

Mihnea Costoiu, Rector of the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, criticised the cuts, noting comparisons with Ukraine’s increased education spending despite wartime conditions.

Key developments:

• Education ministry funding reduced by 600 million lei (€117.8m)

• Trade unions considering strike action in March or June 2026

• Education unions launching petition requiring 100,000 signatures

• Government budget draft expected in parliament by 20 February 2026
