Keir Starmer has resisted calls to step down from Labour leadership, telling MPs he is “not prepared to walk away” despite a tumultuous past week that exposed fractures within the party.
This comes after a string of resignations and criticism linked to Peter Mandelson’s resignation over ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Mandelson reportedly leaked sensitive government information to Epstein while serving as business secretary under Gordon Brown.
Starmer also confronted internal challenges:
• Anas Sarwar, Scottish Labour leader, called for Starmer to resign, citing damage to party support in Scotland.
• Morgan McSweeney, chief adviser, resigned over Mandelson’s US ambassador appointment.
• Tim Allan, director of communications, quit, marking Starmer’s fifth communications chief since taking office.
Starmer pledged to rebuild relations with MPs while preparing for Reform UK challenges and upcoming elections.
