Türkiye could be drawn into a regional nuclear arms race Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has warned, saying countries “with problematic issues with Iran will begin to strive to acquire nuclear weapons.” His remarks signal broader regional security concerns, including long-standing tensions involving Israel’s undeclared nuclear capabilities.

Speaking to CNN Türk, Fidan said Ankara does not want instability but warned “we will likely be forced to join this race” if the regional balance of power shifts. He stressed nuclear proliferation is a “high-level strategic issue.”

Fidan added “The Iranians don’t have atomic bombs,” while cautioning that military strikes would not produce regime change in Tehran and that the Middle East cannot sustain another war.

Key developments:

• Türkiye remains a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) with no weapons programme.

• US nuclear weapons are hosted at Incirlik Air Base, without Turkish deployment authority.

• Ankara continues supporting diplomatic efforts over Iran’s nuclear programme.
