The United States and Azerbaijan have signed a strategic partnership agreement in Baku, expanding defence, economic, and technology cooperation amid shifting power dynamics in the South Caucasus.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed the deal with US Vice President JD Vance, who is touring the region following a visit to Armenia. Aliyev said the agreement marks a “new phase” in cooperation, including defence sales, artificial intelligence, energy security, and counter-terrorism.

Key developments:

• The US will provide Azerbaijan with ships to help protect territorial waters.

• Vance signed a separate agreement with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan that could support construction of a US-backed nuclear power plant.

• Washington is promoting the proposed Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) corridor linking Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Turkey.

• The initiative aims to strengthen trade, energy diversification, and regional stability.

Despite progress, Armenia and Azerbaijan have yet to finalise a formal peace treaty following decades of conflict.
