NATO has launched a new mission, Arctic Sentry, to strengthen allied military coordination in the Arctic and High North, following tensions linked to U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal for the United States to acquire Greenland, part of NATO ally Denmark.

The alliance said the mission will oversee increasing allied military activity and reinforce regional stability in one of the world’s most strategically significant regions.

U.S. Air Force General Alexus G. Grynkewich, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, said the mission reflects NATO’s commitment to safeguarding member territories and maintaining Arctic security.

Key developments:

• Arctic Sentry will coordinate NATO Arctic exercises, including Denmark’s Arctic Endurance on Greenland.

• The UK, led by Defence Secretary John Healey, will contribute forces.

• The UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) will deploy personnel across Iceland, Norway and the Danish Straits during a major exercise in September.

• JEF members include Nordic, Baltic and European partner states.
