NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said Allied defence ministers agreed to strengthen collective deterrence, accelerate military production, and maintain support for Ukraine following meetings in Brussels on Thursday (12 February).
Rutte highlighted progress towards NATO’s 5% of GDP defence spending target, noting countries including Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland have met or exceeded investment goals. He also said Germany is on course to significantly increase defence spending.
NATO emphasised expanding defence industries, increasing ammunition and air defence production, and strengthening supply chains across the transatlantic alliance.
Key developments:
• Ukraine Defence Contact Group, chaired by German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and UK Defence Secretary John Healey, convened 50 nations to coordinate military assistance.
• Seven NATO allies launched a project to strengthen Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD).
• Five allies agreed to collaborate on drone-based deep precision strike capabilities.
• Sweden joined the Air Battle Decisive Munitions (ABDM) multinational initiative.
Rutte said NATO remains united in defending Allied territory and supporting Ukraine’s battlefield resilience and technological innovation.
