Donald Trump has confirmed plans to deploy a second US aircraft carrier to the Middle East, warning it could support military action against Iran if nuclear negotiations fail.

“In case we don’t make a deal, we’ll need it,” Trump told reporters at the White House before flying to North Carolina to address troops at Fort Bragg, one of the country’s leading military bases. He added that the second aircraft carrier would be “leaving very soon”.

Key developments:

• The USS Gerald R Ford strike group will reinforce US naval presence alongside existing regional forces.

• The US previously deployed another carrier as tensions with Tehran escalated.

• Additional missile defence systems and fighter jets have also been repositioned.

• Trump discussed Iran strategy with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who urged tougher conditions on any nuclear deal.

• The carrier previously supported US operations targeting alleged narcotics trafficking and actions linked to Nicolás Maduro.

Washington says diplomacy remains the preferred outcome but maintains military readiness.
