France’s President Emmanuel Macron has urged European nations to strengthen long-term defence planning, declaring that “Europe has to learn to become a geopolitical power.”

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Macron called for deeper strategic autonomy, including developing deep-strike capabilities and reviewing how France’s nuclear deterrent could support wider European security.

He warned that Europe will continue facing an aggressive Russia, even if a settlement is reached in the war in Ukraine. Macron stressed that temporary agreements must not undermine long-term regional stability.

The French President confirmed consultations with European partners, including talks with Friedrich Merz, aimed at modernising Europe’s Cold War-era security architecture and reassessing nuclear deterrence cooperation.
