Australia has announced A$3.9 billion ($2.76 billion) to advance construction of a shipyard in Osborne, South Australia, supporting the country’s nuclear-powered submarine programme under the AUKUS trilateral pact with the United States and Britain.

• Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the investment a “down payment” for the shipyard, crucial for delivering conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines.

• Total project costs are projected at A$30 billion over the coming decades.

• The Osborne facility, operated jointly by Australia’s ASC and Britain’s BAE Systems, will build the new class of AUKUS submarines and maintain the current Collins-class fleet.

• South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas highlighted the funding will establish enabling infrastructure, calling it “just the beginning.”

A December 2025 Pentagon review noted opportunities to strengthen the AUKUS programme, including accelerating Australia’s nuclear submarine capabilities.
