Israel has approved a land registration process across parts of the West Bank, potentially expanding state control over contested territory.
The move restarts land title procedures frozen since 1967. Authorities will require claimants to submit proof of ownership when areas are designated for registration.
Anti-settlement group Peace Now warned the policy could transfer large areas of privately held Palestinian land to state control. Settlement Watch Director Hagit Ofran said the process could allow Israel to control most of Area C, which remains under Israeli military administration.
The office of Mahmoud Abbas, representing the Palestinian Authority, called the decision a violation of international law and urged action from the United Nations Security Council and the United States.
Yariv Levin, Israel’s Justice Minister, said the policy strengthens Israeli governance. Regional criticism followed, including statements from Jordan and Qatar.
• Over 700,000 Israelis live in settlements across the West Bank and East Jerusalem
• Around 300,000 Palestinians reside in Area C
• Area C comprises roughly 60% of the West Bank
• Registration could begin during 2026
