US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has praised Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán ahead of Hungary’s 2026 parliamentary elections, describing bilateral ties as entering a “golden era”. Speaking during talks in Budapest, Rubio said US President Donald Trump is “deeply committed” to Orbán’s political success.

Rubio said, “We are entering this golden era of relations between our countries,” adding that Orbán’s leadership is “essential and vital” to US national interests in Central Europe. The visit included the signing of civilian nuclear cooperation agreements covering small modular reactors, nuclear fuel supply and storage technology.

Orbán, facing a competitive election challenge from the Tisza Party, echoed the sentiment, stating that “a new golden age has set upon us” in US–Hungary relations.
