Tarique Rahman has been sworn in as Prime Minister of Bangladesh after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party secured a decisive parliamentary election victory.
The oath was administered by President Mohammed Shahabuddin, formally ending the interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, which oversaw largely peaceful elections. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin earlier swore in lawmakers.
Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and late President Ziaur Rahman, pledged to govern according to law and called for national unity.
His government faces challenges restoring political stability following the 2024 uprising that removed Sheikh Hasina.
Key developments:
• BNP-led alliance secured 212 of 350 parliamentary seats.
• Opposition coalition led by Jamaat-e-Islami won 77 seats.
• Opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman pledged a peaceful and principled opposition.
• Government prioritising economic recovery, investor confidence and garment sector revival.
Rahman described the result as a victory for democracy while acknowledging economic and institutional challenges.
