The head of Niger’s military junta General Abdourahamane Tiani has announced a “new dynamic” in relations between Niger and Algeria following talks with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in Algiers.

Both leaders confirmed plans to advance the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, a 4,000km project designed to transport gas from Nigeria through Niger to Algeria. President Tebboune described the meeting as ending an “abnormal period of chilliness” between the neighbours.

Relations deteriorated after Algeria downed a Malian drone in April 2025, prompting ambassador withdrawals by members of the Alliance of Sahel States, including Burkina Faso and Mali.

Key developments:

• Initial pipeline construction steps expected after Ramadan 2026.

• Algeria pledged economic support to Niger, including health and education projects.

• Algeria recently held mining and hydrocarbons talks with Burkina Faso, while tensions with Mali persist over security accusations.
