Peru’s Congress has impeached interim president José Jerí, escalating the country’s long-running political instability ahead of the scheduled April 2026 general election.
Lawmakers approved seven impeachment motions by 75 votes to 24, with three abstentions. Jerí, who became president in October 2025, is the sixth national leader in a decade to leave office early. He is not contesting the upcoming election, with power scheduled to transfer on 28 July.
The vote followed corruption scrutiny linked to undisclosed meetings with Chinese businessmen, including Yang Zhihua and Ji Wu Xiaodong.
Key developments:
• Videos showed Jerí visiting businesses linked to Yang Zhihua without logging official activity.
• Investigative programme Cuarto Poder reported further presidential palace visits by Ji Wu Xiaodong.
The removal follows the ousting of former president Dina Boluarte. Earlier instability included the impeachment and imprisonment of Pedro Castillo, alongside corruption convictions involving Alejandro Toledo, Ollanta Humala, and former authoritarian leader Alberto Fujimori.
