President of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Tuesday (17 February), signing an energy cooperation memorandum with Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed to expand bilateral trade, renewable energy projects and regional diplomacy.

Alparslan Bayraktar said the agreement between Türkiye and Ethiopia provides a roadmap for joint energy production, hydroelectric equipment development and efficiency initiatives.

Ethiopia also sought Turkish diplomatic backing to secure maritime access after becoming landlocked following Eritrea’s independence in 1993.

• Leaders aim to increase Türkiye–Ethiopia trade to $1 billion.
