More than 80 UN member states and regional organisations have condemned Israel’s recent actions in the occupied West Bank, calling them “unilateral” and in violation of international law.

The criticism follows the Israeli government’s decision in February 2026 to begin registering large areas of the West Bank as “state property” — a process suspended since 1967 — a move seen by critics as enabling settlement expansion and altering the territory’s status

Delivering a statement at a news conference at UN headquarters in New York, Palestine’s UN envoy Riyad Mansour stated that these measures, including settlement expansion and registration of land as “state property,” threaten peace efforts and undermine prospects for a two-state solution.

Key developments:

• The statement, supported by the EU, League of Arab States, and Organization of Islamic Cooperation, rejected changes to the demographic and territorial status of Palestinian lands.

• The ICJ’s July 2024 advisory opinion declared Israel’s occupation illegal, urging the evacuation of all West Bank and East Jerusalem settlements.

The group reaffirmed that a just and lasting peace requires adherence to UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
