Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has accused Thailand of maintaining forces inside Cambodia territory despite a ceasefire linked to mediation by US President Donald Trump. Speaking to Reuters, he described the border situation as “fragile” and urged the activation of a joint boundary commission.
“We still have Thai forces occupy(ing) deep into Cambodian territory in many areas. This is further beyond even Thailand’s own unilateral claim… border line,” Hun Manet told Reuters.
“This is not an accusation but it’s a statement of the facts on the ground,” he said.
“We hope that Thailand will agree and start to allow the JBC (joint boundary commission) to work as early as possible,” Hun Manet said.
Thailand denied it is occupying territory the allegation and said it is maintaining troop positions as part of de-escalation measures.
“We are adhering to the joint statement, which agreed to maintain existing troop deployments. There has been no reinforcement,” Thailand’s Defense Ministry spokesperson, Rear Admiral Surasant Kongsiri, told Reuters.
Key developments:
• Fighting along the 817-km border displaced hundreds of thousands and disrupted regional trade.
• A 2025 peace accord involving Malaysia collapsed before a December ceasefire.
• Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul cited domestic elections as delaying boundary demarcation.
Hun Manet will be in Washington this week to attend a meeting of Trump’s Board of Peace, expressing hope that the new body could help de-escalate the ‘fragile’ situation on the border.
