Former South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol has been sentenced to life imprisonment for leading an insurrection linked to his failed 2024 martial law declaration.

A three-judge panel at Seoul Central District Court ruled that Yoon attempted to subvert the constitution. Judge Ji Gwi-yeon said his actions “fundamentally undermined” democratic principles.

Yoon, 65, avoids the death penalty but may seek parole after 20 years. He can appeal to the Supreme Court.

The case marks one of South Korea’s most significant constitutional crises since democratisation.
