Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has positioned India as a central player in the global artificial intelligence ecosystem, calling for technology to be built domestically and deployed worldwide.
Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi in 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “Design and develop in India. Deliver to the world. Deliver to humanity.”
The summit also featured French President Emmanuel Macron, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, who proposed a $3 billion fund to expand AI capacity in developing countries.
Key developments:
• OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed collaboration with Tata Group on AI and data centre infrastructure in India.
• Microsoft pledged $17.5bn over four years for AI and cloud expansion.
• Google committed $15bn, including its first AI hub in India.
• Amazon plans $35bn investment by 2030 targeting AI-led digitisation.
With nearly one billion internet users, India aims to bridge advanced economies and the Global South, though it still lacks a domestically developed large-scale AI model comparable to leading US and Chinese firms.
