The UN Security Council, chaired by UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, has addressed the escalating humanitarian crisis in Sudan. Cooper described the situation as “the worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century,” highlighting the displacement of 14 million people, sexual violence and widespread famine among children.
A recent report by the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for the Sudan found evidence of genocidal acts in and around El Fasher, North Darfur — the mission called these the “Hallmarks of Genocide in El Fasher.”
• Targeted attacks on Zaghawa and Fur communities, including killings, sexual violence, torture, and enforced disappearances.
• Prolonged siege over 18 months, depriving civilians of food, water, medical care, and humanitarian aid.
• Systematic intent demonstrated through perpetrator statements and coordinated RSF operations.
• Ongoing risk of further violence as the conflict spreads to Kordofan and beyond.
The mission urges the international community to take immediate action to protect civilians and hold perpetrators accountable.
