US President Donald Trump convened the first meeting of the Board of Peace in Washington, DC, aimed at overseeing Gaza’s reconstruction and possibly addressing other global hotspots in the future.

Representatives from more than 40 countries attended. Palestinian representatives were absent, while some states participated as observers. Trump announced $7 billion in pledges from member states and a $10 billion US contribution for Gaza relief and rebuilding.

Addressing the United Nations, Trump said, “The Board of Peace is going to almost be looking over the United Nations and making sure it runs properly,” adding that it would work “very closely” with the UN and help strengthen its facilities and viability.

On Iran, Trump said, “Good talks are being had,” but stressed Iran “cannot have a nuclear weapon”, warning military action could come “over the next, probably 10 days” if no agreement is reached.

The remarks followed inconclusive US-Iran talks in Geneva and continued US military deployments in the Middle East.
