India–Brazil relations strengthened on Saturday (21 February) as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held wide-ranging talks in New Delhi, targeting expanded trade and strategic cooperation.

Speaking at Hyderabad House, PM Modi described the partnership as “beneficial for a long time” and set a goal of raising bilateral trade beyond $20 billion within five years.

Key developments include:

• Agreement on critical minerals and rare earths to strengthen resilient supply chains

• Expanding defence cooperation and strategic alignment

• Boosting trade through the India–MERCOSUR trade agreement expansion

• Increased collaboration in technology, pharmaceuticals and innovation

Brazil remains India’s largest trading partner in Latin America.

President Lula called the meeting one of “superlatives”, describing India as a “digital superpower” and Brazil a “renewable energy superpower”, underscoring shared ambitions across the Global South.
