President Donald Trump has raised the US worldwide tariff from 10% to 15%, the maximum permitted under Section 122 of the Trade Act, after the US Supreme Court struck down his previous tariff framework.
The court ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) did not authorise the broad tariffs he imposed.
The new 15% tariff will apply to most imports, with exemptions for critical minerals, metals and energy products.
Key developments:
• Chief Justice John Roberts, joined by Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett, and three liberal justices, ruled Trump exceeded his authority under IEEPA.
• Section 122 tariffs expire after 150 days unless extended by Congress.
• Existing trade deals remain in force, including 19% rates on Malaysia, Cambodia and Indonesia, according to US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
Foreign leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, said the ruling reaffirmed rule of law and could ease pressure on exporters.
