Pakistan said it carried out early-morning cross-border strikes into eastern Afghanistan on Sunday (22 February), targeting alleged hideouts of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and affiliated militants.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar described the action as “intelligence-based, selective operations” against seven militant camps. He said an affiliate of Islamic State was also targeted.

Afghan authorities reported civilian casualties. The Afghan defence ministry said “various civilian areas” in Nangarhar and Paktika provinces were hit, including a madrassa and homes.

Afghanistan’s defense ministry condemned what it called the blatant violation of national sovereignty as a “breach of international law, ‌the principles of good neighborliness and Islamic values.”

It added in its statement, “An appropriate and measured response will be taken at a suitable time.”

Key developments:

• 18 people killed, according to Mawlawi Fazl Rahman Fayyaz of the Afghan Red Crescent Society.

• Islamabad cited recent attacks, including a mosque bombing in Islamabad that killed 31.

• Pakistan urged Taliban authorities to act under the Doha agreement.

Relations remain strained despite a Qatari-mediated ceasefire.
